Why You’ll Love This Strawberry Peanut Butter Smoothie
I’m a big fan of smoothies. They pack so many nutrients into one convenient and delicious glass. They’re easy to sip as I go about my morning routine and I can make the most of fresh seasonal fruits and veggies. But if there is one complaint I have about smoothies, is when I am hungry only an hour or two later.
I’ve found that adding a bit of fat to them, in the form of avocado (in my pear and avocado smoothie) coconut (like in my Healthy Green Smoothie with Swiss Chard or this Green Apple Smoothie) or protein (like this Vanilla Green Protein Smoothie) really helps them have a bit more staying power and keeps me full until lunchtime.
This Strawberry Peanut Butter Smoothie has both added fat (from the peanut butter) and protein (from the protein powder and peanut butter) to help on both fronts. So let’s just say, this smoothie really satisfies!
It makes a great breakfast because it has just over 300 calories and gives a great dose of healthy fats and 21 grams of protein. Plus it is a great way to enjoy strawberries while they are in season. Their season is so fleeting, why not enjoy them at every meal?
Ingredients For Strawberry Peanut Butter Smoothie
Frozen Banana
The frozen banana in this smoothie makes the texture of this smoothie creamy and thick and adds natural sweetness. I usually freeze bananas as they start to get too dark and ripe to snack on. These are perfect for adding to smoothies.
You can freeze them by peeling and storing them in a resealable plastic freezer bag.
Almond Milk, Oat Milk or Milk of Choice
Feel free to use whatever milk you like for this. I have been keeping unsweetened oat milk on hand because it is creamy and neutral-tasting. But if you prefer cow’s milk or nut milk feel free to use that instead.
Fresh Strawberries
The star of this recipe is fresh strawberries. To prepare them give them a good wash in a bowl of cold water. Then simply remove the green hull and stem and pop them into the blender. If you do not have fresh strawberries, you can use frozen, but you may want to skip the ice so the smoothies won’t be too icy.
Ice
I add in a half cup of ice to these smoothies because I like how it really thickens up the texture and makes them super cold. As I said, if you use frozen strawberries you can skip it as they will make the smoothies icy enough.
Peanut Butter
Unsweetened natural smooth peanut butter is best for this smoothie. You’ll only need one tablespoon of it to give the smoothie peanut butter flavor (and the added nutritional boost) without overpowering the flavor of the berries.
Protein Powder
I like to use vanilla protein powder in this smoothie because it helps make it sweet and it adds protein to help with satiety and fullness. Feel free to use a collagen, whey or vegan powder depending on your preference.
If you are not a fan of protein powder you can skip this altogether. If so, you may want to add 1 teaspoon of honey to sweeten the smoothie.
Instructions To Make This Strawberry Peanut Butter Smoothie
Step 1: Hull The Strawberries
First, rinse the berries in a bowl of cold water and drain well. Then cut the green stem and hull off the strawberries.
Step 2: Combine Ingredients in a Blender
Break the banana into a couple of pieces and drop it into the jar of a blender. Add in milk, berries, ice, peanut butter and protein powder and cover the blender with the lid.
Step 3: Puree The Smoothie
Switch on the blender and gradually turn it up to high. Puree until the is completely smooth and you can no longer hear chunks of ice in the blender.
Step 4: Pour and Enjoy
Pour the smoothie into a tall glass. Garnish with a whole berry if you like and enjoy immediately.
FAQs and Expert Tips
I happen to prefer my smoothies when they are thick and icy cold, so I do not make mine ahead, but if you do not mind leftover smoothies, you definitely can make this ahead. If planning to do so, omit the ice. Keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours. Stir well before enjoying. The texture will be thinner and the smoothie will not be as cold but the flavor will still be great.
If you do not have fresh strawberries, you can use frozen, but you may want to skip the ice so the smoothies won’t be too icy.
Yes, you can. Note that flavored protein powders usually include a nonnutritive sweetener and it makes the smoothie taste sweet. If you omit the protein powder, you can add 1 teaspoon honey or another sweetener such as monk fruit. If you are not sure if you need the added sweetness, try the smoothie first, then blend in sweetener if you feel it needs additional sweetness.
