Creating This Green Tea Smoothie Recipe
Matcha green tea powder is an ingredient I didn’t know much about until I came across it in a few cookbooks friends had shared. I used it in this black bean burger with green tea aioli and I coated dark chocolate truffles in matcha last year. After trying the recipes in the tea cookbooks, I was psyched to know that matcha green tea powder was an ingredient I could add to recipes for an added health benefit. What I also learned is that a little goes a long way. In other words, it can seem a little bitter if you add too much. The good news is that it is uber potent. You get 137 times more antioxidants than regular green tea.
I have not been too adventurous on my own though, so I needed some ideas for ways to incorporate it into my recipes. I decided to try adding it to my green smoothie to see if it would change the flavor in an off way. Just like at a smoothie bar, where there are added “Boosts” on the menu, like bee pollen and flax seeds. Well, that’s what I was going for.
And it worked out great. Typically I make this Vanilla Green Protein Smoothie more than other smoothie combinations. So I adjusted that recipe a bit by adding in strawberries (which are an excellent source of Vitamin C.) I also decreased the amount of banana to one half.
How to Make a Green Tea Smoothie
This is one heck of an antioxidant smoothie. Between the spinach, fruit, and matcha powder, it really is a powerhouse drink. To make this green tea smoothie, simply combine almond milk, matcha powder, banana, strawberries, spinach, ice, and protein powder in a blender and pulse until smooth and the ice is no longer chunky. For a thicker smoothie, try adding more ice or freezing the fruit ahead of time. For a thinner smoothie, use less ice or add a touch more almond milk.
For easy cleanup, add a little warm water and dish soap into your blender and pulse to clean out any green tea smoothie residue left hanging out in there. Give the blender a final rinse under running water, then set it aside to dry.

Thanks Jennifer. I am so glad you love this smoothie as much as I do. Have a great week!
Looking healthy, I would try it for sure. Thanks for great share.
Is there a way to substitute actual green tea for the matcha powder?
I am not entirely sure, but you could try swapping 1 cup cooled brewed green tea for the matcha and almond milk.
Hm… sounds delicious and.. healthy! I have to try your fantastic recipe.
Hey katie,
I am trying to loose weight. So, low-fat smoothies and detox are the main items in my food list. I want to try this antioxidant smoothie but new to matcha powder. Can you tell me any other ingredient that I can use in place of matcha powder? Thank you.
You can omit it all together if you don’t want to use it. It is mostly there for the antioxidant boost, more than the flavor.
Thanks. Just pinned it. Some people have a hard time with the taste of Matcha but I like it…
In larger quantities it can be quite bitter, but the good news is that you don’t need much of it to get benefits! Thank you for pinning Anna.
Finally made this, it was so delicious! Thank you for the recipe:)
That is really great to hear. I am so glad you came back to report Marla. Have a great day!
Ohh…I’ve discovered Matcha since giving up coffee. I can’t wait to try this:)
I cannot wait to try this, Katie! Perfect to add to my morning smoothie list! I just went to a health symposium last week and one doctor spoke quite a bit of the health benefits of green tea and matcha. Gorgeous images…as always!
Ohhh a health symposium sounds great. I would have loved to have gone with you. Thanks for visiting my friend. Miss you! 🙂
Katie, this looks awesome! I am so overdue to try matcha powder and after seeing this I don’t think I can wait any longer 🙂
It took me a while to try it too, but I am glad to know about it now that I have. Thanks so much for coming by and saying hello. Have a great day.
Sounds absolutely amazing! and a good way to start the day.
Hey Susan, Thanks so much! Have a great day!
I make almost this same exact smoothie, but I don’t have protein powder so I sub a Tbsp of peanut butter and I usually substitute the frozen strawberries for frozen pineapple or mango (but I have used strawberries too!). I just got into using matcha powder in smoothies, its such a great addition!
My daughter loves it when I add peanut butter to her smoothies. i like the idea for your frozen fruit alternatives. So many options!
I haven’t tried using matcha powder in smoothies but I have to! I love the extra boost of healthy benefits it adds.
Hey Julia! How are you? Yeah, definitely give it a try. It is really strong flavored so using it in a smoothie makes it more palatable.
I’m new to matcha, so this recipe really motivated me to add it to my list of recipes to try. I love how refreshing this looks, and I bet it makes your feel clean and energized:)
hey Maria, thanks so much for dropping by! It is potent stuff, so this is a good way to ease into using it for sure.
We have a hike planned for our day tomorrow and I know i will be craving this beauty once I am done. I love getting in all kinds of nutrients this way!
Yay! Hope you enjoy it Kristen.
