Why We Love This Recipe For Green Mountain Smoothie
This Greek yogurt green smoothie gets its name from its green color and my home state of Vermont! is one of the yummiest ways of getting your greens, and it is packed with 13 grams of protein thanks to the addition of Greek Yogurt!
I love drinking protein smoothies after my workouts, but I don’t always have protein powder at home. I also must admit that not all protein powders taste all that great. That’s why I love adding Greek yogurt instead. Most singular servings of protein powder pack about 18 grams of protein, so Greek yogurt is almost the equivalent!
If you DO like adding protein powder to your smoothies, you can try mixing in a serving to this Vanilla Green Protein Smoothie. I also have been making this Healthy Green Smoothie a lot lately. It has Swiss Chard in it!
Key Ingredients For This Recipe
Greek yogurt
Plain Greek-style yogurt, such as Cabot is ideal for this healthy Greek yogurt smoothie. It packs lots of protein and makes for a super creamy, smooth and filling smoothie.
Dates
Dates were added to naturally sweeten this smoothie. You can either buy pitted dates, or non-pitted dates, but for the recipe they should be peeled, pitted and broken in half. Medjool dates are the best, but any you can get your hands on are great.
Kale
The green color comes from fresh kale leaves. It adds tons of nutrition and yet you really won’t taste it! If you do not have kale you could use spinach instead.
Banana
To make the smoothie creamy I added in banana which I think is almost essential in a good smoothie. It also adds natural sweetness too!
Additional Ingredients
- ¾ cup apple cider or apple juice
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 cup ice
Step by Step Instructions to Make This Green Smoothie with Greek Yogurt
Step 1: Combine ingredients
Place the dates, banana, yogurt, cider or juice, honey and ice in a blender. Top with kale leaves, then cover and puree on high until completely smooth, 45 seconds to 1 minute.
Step 2: Serve
Divide the Greek yogurt green smoothie between two glasses and serve immediately.
FAQs and Expert Tips
Yes! Greek yogurt is amazing in smoothies which is why I chose to use it. It’s a great source of protein if you don’t enjoy using protein powder in smoothies. It also makes the smoothie really thick and creamy.
I recommend using plain Greek yogurt for this recipe, however you can use vanilla flavored or maple-flavored instead if you’d like.
If kept in a mason jar in the fridge, smoothies can last 1-2 days. With that being said, they are much tastier if they’re made directly before eating, as the ingredients can separate otherwise (and melt, if using frozen ingredients).

This is a really nice way to get a lift after a walk or exercise, my partner whipped up a couple after our sunday ride and we both enjoyed them plus this smoothie is healthy, what more can you ask 🙂
Hey, Katie. Is it OK if I share your recipe on my new running site? I will, of course, give you all the credit and suggest that folks check our your blog for more healthy and yummy fuel…Let me know?
Of course Erin! I would love that:)
I used figs instead of dates and needed to use plain unsweetened yogurt instead of greek yogurt and this recipe ended up great! Thanks!
I love figs. Especially fresh ones in the fall. I am glad the substitutions worked well. That’s one of the best things about a smoothie. Thanks for coming by.
Hi there! I just stumbled upon this recipe, and being a fellow Vermonter & food blogger, I just wanted to say hi. I’m looking forward to checking out some more of your recipes ☺
Gorgeous photography! I’m so glad to see the pics of the farm since I missed that part of the weekend. After so many days of eating all of our yummy baked goods, this green smoothie feels like the perfect and healthy antidote!
Jen, I am glad you like the photos. Did you see any of the piglets? They were painfully cute. I didn’t get any good shots of them, but I think Jennifer did. I have a lot more to get through from the three days. And yes a good dose of yogurt and greens does the body good:)
That smoothie looks amazing…and all the more impressive that it uses Cabot yogurt! Great post…and I might have to pick up the ingredients to make that delicious looking smoothie sometime this week.
Thanks David. I love that Cabot:) It was great to get to know you at Blog and Bake. Thank you for allowing me to bombard you with a million questions. Have you been in the kitchen baking up a storm?
I have yet to make it into the kitchen to do some actual baking…but I’m dying to get in there! I think this weekend might involve some bread baking. And if you ever have more questions, then let me know…I probably can’t help, but I sure can try!
I haven’t edited my pictures, but I have started baking – that counts, right? 🙂
And the first thing I did when I got home was make green juice. Guess we were all feeling the need for a cleanse.
WHOA! You are FAST! That smoothie looks divine. I love green smoothies and I am fortunate enough to be able to buy Cabot yogurt locally, so I’m going to be making this toute de suite!
Rebecca, Thanks so much. I’m not that fast, I still haven’t sorted the photos from day two and three;) I never did get my poolish started yesterday. Did you make pizza for dinner?
I’m not even a little surprised that these pictures are beyond beautiful! You really captured the farm so well!
On another note- I wanna go to that event in NYC! I may have to contact them.
And-I adore green smoothies- my favorite way to sneak in veggies- your version looks wonderful!
Thank you Audra. I am looking forward to seeing all the other photos from everyone else.
I wish I could go to the bike event too. I think they are using a bike-powered blender to make the giant smoothie! That would be something to see:)
Smoothies are such a delicious and healthy way to power up and this one looks amazing. I can’t wait to share it with our Cabot fans on Facebook!
I am now officially on a smoothie kick thanks to this series with Cabot. And that would be super if you shared with all of your fb fans. Thanks so much!!
I haven’t even looked at my photos, and you’ve already posted! Beautiful photos! My mission today (besides sorting through photos) is to get some Cabot yogurt. That stuff is so amazingly good!
Don’t feel bad, as you know, I had a much shorter trip home, so it was easy to get these sorted out quickly. I am really excited to get into the kitchen and start baking again though. I am full of ideas.
Oh that smoothie looks amazingly gorgeous and I NEED to get my hands on that Cabot yogurt!
Thanks Marnely. I always have it on hand for granola and yogurt “parfaits” for my girls. And it really makes a great smoothie. I hope you had a good trip home.
I am so jealous! I used to get the KAF Baking Sheet I bet when we lived in Wycombe! (And at that point I was still baking our bread – I didn’t buy any bread for the first 15 or so years that we were married!) And so I have long wanted to go to one of their cooking class/demos. I will look forward to hearing more.
Debbie, The Baking Sheet is so awesome. I grabbed a copy while I was there. Chef Susan, who writes it, is my food science idol. King Arthur just announced that they are making the Baking Sheet available, and all of the archives, in a new app. http://links.e.kingarthurflour.net/servlet/MailView?ms=NTQxNDU1NwS2&r=NDE5NTc3Njc5NTkS1&j=MzE3NjkyNDI5S0&mt=1&rt=0 That’s the link to the announcement today. I think my mom used to bake our bread every day when I was really little, and then got out of the habit. After making some at KAF, I am inspired to make it a regular part of our routine.
Thanks for the info, that’s great news! You might get a bread machine, and make it easy, though the girls would love to “help” you knead and shape I bet. ;-D
I am super impressed by the fact that you got a post up less than 24 hours after it ended, you go girl! Also, this smoothie sounds delicious. Just the nice healthy green boost needed to recover from a weekend of tasty baked goods! We make a green juice at home with breakfast. but I think making this smoothie instead would be even better because then we wouldn’t even *need* to eat breakfast since the yogurt gets that nice and filling protein in there.
Love your photos from the trip, btw!!
Eva, I had a much shorter trip home than most of the crew, so don’t be too impressed:) It was great meeting you at Blog and Bake. I agree about it being the perfect breakfast option. A hit of protein makes a big difference. Glad you had a good trip home.
